Renovations on the rise

With TV shows like “The Block” it’s no surprise that renovations are on the rise – in fact a reported increase of 1.6% in building approvals in February (ABS).  This trend is expected to continue with keen renovators wanting a better sale price or more comfortable standard of living.

Rather than the traditional pick up the phone and obtain 3 quotes to sometimes experience overly enthusiastic salespeople, here’s a 10 step guide that will save you a fortune!

  1. Research, research, research the internet and interior magazines to decide on the kitchen style, splashbacks, tiling, appliances that suits you, your family and your home.
  2. Next, measure your kitchen space.  If you are not sure on configuration or measurements you may find a design guide helpful – download free design guide here
  3. Research kitchen companies – visit websites and visit lots of showrooms.  It is important to choose a long standing, reputable company who will be around in the long term should you wish to alter your kitchen or use the same cabinetry elsewhere in your home such as your laundry at a later stage.
  4. Spend time with a Kitchen Designer to finalise your kitchen design and obtain a quote.  It is helpful if the kitchen company has a 3D design computer so you can visualise exactly how your new kitchen will look to a budget that suits you.
  5. Once you have ordered your kitchen, decide on what part if any you wish to do and appoint a kitchen installer/sub trades to do part or all of your kitchen renovation.  More often a reputable kitchen company will have recommended quality tradesmen to look after your installation, plumbing, plastering, electrical and tiling/splashback needs.
  6. Next stage is the removal of the old kitchen including disconnection of electrical, gas and water.  Consider whether to remove old wall and floor coverings or work around.
  7. Now the new plumbing, electrical and if framing is required is all roughed in usually by an installer or yourself.  Any wall or floor surfaces may need to be fixed ready for installation especially waterproofing.
  8. At last the kitchen takes shape with the cabinet installation.
  9. Next benchtops, splashbacks and appliances are installed using a qualified licensed electrician and plumber.
  10. Finally painting and any last minute flooring or wall touch ups and the job is done!

Enjoy your new kitchen with family and friends!

Kitchen Trends here to stay in 2016

Kitchen trends come and go and certainly subject to fashion but one thing’s for sure the following five most popular trends will last the test of time.

White on White kitchens create a bright, fresh, clean space for all homes. White and off white shades of kitchens will last forever, never date and can work in the most modern kitchen as well as traditional.

Colour Kitchen cabinets such as the red gloss seen here create a wow factor that is sure to impress.  This also draws attention to the hub of the home creating the perfect space for family gatherings.  There will always be a need for colour bringing any modern home into the forefront of leading style.

Storage, Storage, Storage – there are so many storage options these days – from lazy susans to pull out pantries, pot drawers and fancy spice racks, the list is endless.

Island Benches are the new must for kitchens.  With busy lives it is quick and easy to pull up a stool and eat a meal or entertain guests while cooking up a storm.

Hidden Appliances are in.  Appliances are now state of the art compared to a long time ago but that doesn’t mean they need to stand out in a kitchen.  Dishwashers are hidden behind matching kitchen cabinet doors all creating a streamline “hidden” appeal.

Backsplashes are another popular choice and adding a bright colour such as this splashback creates unique styling.  Using a bold colour can create a larger high impact to an otherwise small kitchen space.
